We the undersigned support the right of the hundreds of Palestinian students, who are enrolled on or have been accepted onto university courses around the world but who are currently denied permission to leave Gaza by Israel , to be allowed to study. A number of these students have places in British universities, such as Wissam Abuajwa, who is attempting to complete a Master's degree in environmental science at Nottingham University . Last year, a successful campaign was mounted to secure the release of Bradford University student Khaled Al-Mudallal, who had been trapped in Gaza for six months.
The ongoing Israeli siege of 1.5million Palestinians in the Gaza strip is severely curtailing freedom of movement, preventing those who wish to study outside from leaving. Israeli human rights organisation Gisha has condemned this policy as a breach of the right to education as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We call on the British government to urge the Israeli authorities to allow Palestinian students their right to education.
